Shadow silently walked to the small pond where Cloud once brought him to train. This was the place that Shadow could think, clear his mind, and maybe consult with the stars. He glanced at his reflection in the weird colored water, and he didn't like what he saw.
Shadow sighed, backing up from the pond, and looking at the sky. He smiled. "Hello, Cloud. You getting sick of hearing me talk, yet? Heh, probably..." He paused for a slight moment. "Dawn and Horizon had their cubs today. What am I saying? You know already, right? You were there, I could tell."
A star twinkled almost in response to his words, like it knew what Shadow was saying.
Shadow nodded. "I thought so..." He took a deep breath, not really sure how to start. What he was about to say...it wasn't like him. "Cloud...for the first time in my life I'm...I'm scared. I mean, I was scared when you died, and when Dawn got hurt, and when Horizon went into a depression, and when those monsters came here...but this feeling's different. I-I'm slowly giving up, Cloud. I realize I can't protect everyone now. I'm not strong enough. I'm not brave enough. I'm nothing like you. I even left them...Cloud, please...give me a sign. Give me advice. Give me strength or courage...just...give me something. I'm failing you, and I'm failing everyone in this pride by letting Mfalme take over. I'm...I'm...I'm nothing anymore. How can I be Key warrior? How can I lead them when I can't even lead myself?" He took a deep breath as the words finally flowed from his mouth. "Cloud...give me something that I can look forward to, give me something I can love, let me start over. Please..."
"Are you okay?"
Shadow jumped. His eyes flew everywhere until they finally landed across the pond, at a lioness. Her green eyes gleamed with interest. "Who are you? Wait...you're one of those lionesses, right? With Scruffy?"
She jumped over the pond, landing with ease beside him. "Yes...I'm N'gora. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop, I was just...who're talking to?" She glanced around, finding nothing. She turned back to Shadow.
"No one...myself, I guess."
"You call yourself Cloud? Thought your name was Shadow." She smiled at him, a warm, sweet smile.
"...What do you want?" Shadow didn't want to some so mean, but the words spat out like a swear, he didn't have control.
"No need to be harsh. I only wanted to make sure you were alright. Are you?" She leaned towards him a bit, careful not to touch him by mistake.
"I'm fine." Again with that tone. What was wrong with him!?
"No, you're not. You know, they say it's easier to talk to a stranger about your problems. I'm pretty strange."
"...N'gora, have you ever lost someone close to you?"
"Yes. My whole family."
"I'm sorry...How did you...deal with it?"
"There's not really a way to 'deal with it', you just kind of...tough it out. Look to your future and not your past."
"You see, I can't do that. I'm stuck in my past. There's no getting out."
"There's always a way out." She nodded to a firefly that flew past. "Just find your light and follow it."
"It's not as easy as it looks."
"Sure it is! Just be positive! Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to smile more."
"How can I smile when there's nothing to smile about?"
"Wow, you sure are grumpy, aren't you?"
"I'm not grumpy!"
"Prove it! Smile right now!"
"I don't wanna." Shadow turned his head away from her.
"Okay, okay." Shadow let out a half smile. "There. Happy?"
"Ecstatic!" She giggled, and Shadow almost smiled seriously. But he didn't. "You know, you look good when you smile."
"I do? Uhm, thanks, I think."
"You're very welcome. And Shadow?"
"I hope you can find your light." With that, she turned around and walked away. Not even looking back.
Shadow watched her leave for a moment, then looked at his reflection. He smiled a bit. "Huh...she was right...I do look good." He turned, following N'gora. "Hey, wait up!"
